Wings While Spread Your Wings is a pleasant, undemanding sort of story, A Cure With Kindness is actually an entertaining read Set in Scotland, the novel opens with the heroine, district nurse Rosabel Fairbarn, and her brother Dr Peter Fairbarn coming across a stranger who has passed out on the surgery doorstep Immediately, Rosabel assumes the scruffy looking man is a drunk and is at a loss to understand why her brother, after seeing to him, decides to put him up in the flat over their garage When she subsequently learns that their visitor, introduced to her as Robert Carr , is subject to black outs and had his driving license taken away, the heroine is convinced he s a dipsomaniac Rosabel worries that Robert is taking advantage of her brother s good nature, although she s forced to admit Peter is not usually given to such quixotic outbursts of generosity and wonders if there s some mystery about their visitor Initially, Rosabel does her best to avoid Robert, but when he collapses after cleaning her brother s car, she overcomes her aversion dosing him with Alka Seltzer and resolving that,if he s too weak to resist the impulse to drinkperhaps she might be able to teach him to avoid temptation and give up the habitUnfortunately for Rosabel, her thoughts are written all over her face, causing the hero to inquireThat isn t a crusading light I see in your eyes is it Or is it just pity for the poor spineless derelict Robert s humour pierces Rosabel s reserve and, after she turns down her boyfriend s marriage proposal, the pair become regular partners at the local dance, on long walks and even on her district nursing rounds However, despite the time they are spending together, while Rosabel knows the hero s views on the national health service and feminism , she still doesn t know what he does for a living, nor anything of his family or, for that matter, how he managed to procure a lounge suit for the golf club dance when his only luggage is a rucksack Feeling it would be too bold to ask Robert personal questions, Rosabel continues making assumptions, prompting the hero to exclaimMy goodness, I never really knew a girl like you for jumping to conclusionsIt s at this point, around the halfway mark of the book, it becomes evident that this heroine tips particularly high on the obtuse scale She manages, not only to totally overlook the relevance of her brother directing Robert s attention toward an article written by an authority on tropical medicine, but fails to see anything odd in the hero assisting Peter with an emergency delivery of a baby turned into the umbilical cord Subsequently, Rosabel becomes even slower on the uptake, so that even after i being shown an article by her brother featuring a mug shot of Robert with a headline Health Researcher s World Tour Cancelled ii having a supermodel in a sports car turn up view spoiler who is Robert s sister hide spoiler asking for Dr Carver and iii finding the hero in the Matron s office of a London teaching hospital the heroinestilldoesn t figure out his occupation I can only surmise that this is one lady you would never want on your Neighbourhood Watch program Anyhow, having assumed that Robert s female visitor is his girlfriend presumption being the twin to overwhelming obtuseness , a teary eyed Rosabel dashes off on holiday to Gibraltar with a nursing buddy As the hero has decided by this juncture that he cannot live without her, he follows Rosabel to Gibraltar where they are reunited fittingly at a hospital dance Mind, it takes Rosabel s friend a nurse at the London Hospital the heroine had recently visited referring to Robert as our famous Dr Carver for the proverbial penny to finally drop view spoiler Dr Robert Carver is an renown medical researcher He was selected to head the World Research Expedition before he contracted a rare virus in the East Indies which brought him to death s door and left him suffering from severe headaches, bouts of temporary amnesia and black outs hide spoiler Following the hospital dance, a rapprochement takes place between the protagonists and, overlooking the azure Mediterranean waters, they arrive at a satisfying, if slightly tame ish, happy ever after view spoiler the best part of which is the answer Robert gives Rosabel when she demandsWhy all the secrecy about your illness Why didn t you tell me the real trouble instead of letting me make a fool of myself imagining you were an alcoholicTo which the hero respondsI m sorry about that, my sweet But it was so funny the way that you immediately jumped to the conclusion that because I had dizzy spells and you saw me once or twice in the Fisherman s Arms with a glass of ginger ale in my hand, I must be a dipsomaniac I m afraid my perverted sense of humour came to the surface and I neglected to put you righthide spoiler In summary, while ordinarily I d rate A Cure with Kindness a three and a half star vintage romance read, because the hero so amusingly played the heroine s preconceptions, I m adding a half star, bumping the rating to four stars If you ve not tried a title from Ruth Clemence before, you could do a lot worse, in my view, than to get your paws on this one
