were high for her little 1976 book The Decentered Universe of Finnegans Wake a Structuralist Analysis I did jot down a host of notes while I read her book, but there were also long and unnourishing desert stretches to be endured Although Dr Norris provides us with numerous insights about not only Finnegans Wake and the rest of Joyce s oeuvre, in the end her thesis is self defeating, leading to the production of a text which, regrettably, tends toward the windy, the jejune and even dare I say it to the Aeolian. What is her thesis In a nutshell, in a layman friendly recast, it is that Finnegans Wake is a literary collage, or a bricolage her preferred term, appropriated from L vi Strauss , an elaboration on fragments of found art or even lesser scraps although Norris at turns both champions and denies the elaboration hypothesis , ultimately defying interpretation in the sense that there is no deeper meaning or truth or extractable plot to be found no matter how long we keep peeling the onion If you attempt to write an analysis on a subject that you consider to be refractory to analysis, your book is likely to suffer Accordingly, Norris sometimes produces pages and pages expanding upon her perceptions of vortices of semantic vacancy in Finnegans Wake, and in so doing she produces secondary representations of what she considers to be irreducible vacuum In the course of several chapters, she emphasizes, I have examined this lack of certainty in every aspect of the work What can we learn from chapters concluding only uncertainty can be gleaned from pretextual uncertainty I m not necessarily dismissing her thesis out of hand, but pursuing this line of thought to its conclusion may inevitably result in a less than satisfactory read As she quotes a cautionary Heidegger Talking extensively about something covers it up and brings what is understood to a sham clarity For all of Norris talk of decentered sections of text built around vacuous and indefinable origins, it is the connections which she does draw and the conclusions which she does assert that are most compelling One of the biggest ah ha moments may be encapsulated in the Aristotelian analogy Ulysses The Odyssey Finnegans Wake Oedipus Rex The Oedipus complex being central to psychoanalysis, and claims about Joyce s animus toward Freud notwithstanding, he surely concerns himself a great deal with the unconscious mind in Finnegans Wake At a minimum this is undeniably in response to Freud In any case, once Finnegans Wake is perceived as riffing on Oedipus Rex and Freud s Oedipus complex, the association is ineluctable Norris also suggests the provocative analogy Zeus Leda Castor Pollux Helen HCE ALP Shem Shaun Issy Throughout her book Norris has a lot to say about language and linguistics and psychology and sign and symbol and the application of all to Finnegans Wake this is the main thrust of her book, in fact Some of this is quite thought provoking some is not It seems to me that she too seriously considers Joyce s novel to conform strictly to the mechanics of a dream Her metaphorical conception of the ontogeny of Finnegans Wake arising from elaborations on structured sets is a useful notion that rings true But for my money the payoff of The Decentered Universe may be found in the last chapter in which Norris chronicles intriguing parallels between Finnegans Wake and Joyce s earlier books Many of these symmetries had never occurred to me before These are not all original to Norris, but she helpfully collects a number of such observations here We get the comparison of Tom Kernan toppling down the stairs in the bar with HCE s fall, for example, and parallels between Joyce s The Death of Parnell and The Ballad of Persse O Reilly Eveline s role as temptress, and her relationships to her father and to Frank, are compared to the relationships of both ALP and Issy to HCE similar comparisons are made to Gerty McDowell and her relationships with her father and with Bloom Nausicaa is found to be reworked in II.1 of Finnegans Wake Connections are found between Maria in Clay, a bringer of presents, and the washerwomen on the banks of the Liffey Maybe inevitably, Norris book becomes a demonstration of Bruno s insistence of every thesis Finnegans Wake is non novelistic and irreducible to meaning generating an equal and opposite antithesis Norris provides many interpretations and significations for Finnegans Wake across every scale, from word assembly to the text as a whole Still, I appreciate how she points out, with complete accuracy, that Finnegans Wake not only baffles with respect to meaning, if not to the meaning of meaning, but maybeimportantly requires us to learn to read all over again I suspect that may be the greatest gift Joyce s last book gives us
