looking for love, she s looking for hot, casual sex and the Professor is just the man to give her what she wants but what happens when wants change One of the biggest ways a book can impress me is to deviate from the normal story line or formula This book did so in multiple ways 1 Non white hero Woo Hoo Even better, he has an ethnic name YES And that name is UNBELIEVABLY sexy Seriously, try to say Kaname without physically swooning I dare you.2 Nontraditional families 3 A woman that OWNS her sexuality No timid little mouse here 4 Talking honestly about hard issues topics We ll get to this in a minute I cannot adequately put into words how elated I was that the super sexy hero was Asian Our society has completely desexualized the most abundant race on Earth Especially the men Seriously, how many Asian male sex symbols have you seen grace the covers of American magazines I was personally picturing hearing Anthony Ian Dale as Kaname Mmmm Another thing to note is his name Yes, he s regularly referred to as Kane in the book it being the Americanized shortening of his name But I REALLY like how Nadiaoften called him by is actual name Hell, he tells herthan once how much he loves it Why is that a big deal Because she both the heroine AND the author acknowledge his cultural identity hears angels sing YAY Next, if you re a homophobe you may be uncomfortable reading about Nadia s parents but I STRONGLY urge you to buck up and read the reality of same sex relationships and parenting Let it be an eye opener, or don t, it s not like they re the focus Nonetheless I LOVE when homosexual couples are spotlighted in mainstream romance and not just as a subgenre Breaking boundaries people It s good stuff Now normally I REALLY dislike books that just jump right into a story with no build up, books that just drop you in and have you play catch up This book does that, but it s done well so it isn t as abrupt as others It basically opens with Nadia making a big announcement about her sexual revelation that s not a spoiler it s literally on the first page Nadia just wants sex, that s it, no relationship and she s upfront and open about it from the first few sentences of the book Hooray for sexual liberation My only issue with that is that it bothers me when character make such a declaration pact while completely shutting the door on love There s absolutely nothing wrong with detached, casual, no strings attached sex, and women shouldn t be stigamized for having it, it s just that I think it s really unhealthy to put such parameters in place You re not saving yourself from heartbreak by doing so, you re inviting it by putting up so many walls and restrictions Now onto the Hard Issues This book is centered around recovery More than half the characters are recovering from one kind of addiction or another It s VERY honest about a lot of facets regarding that lifestyle The author does an amazing job of putting you into the mind of a recovering addict showing you her fears, her struggles, the daily efforts and triumphs, the social stigmas and judgment all of it is put out there very clearly and eloquently I ve known a LOT of addicts, in varying stages of recovery and there are some parts of this book that are hard to read There are some parts that as a person who has never even done drugs, thus is as far removed from addiction as one can be are hard to comprehend and grasp, so much so that I actually had to call recovering addicts and have them talk me through it That s absolutely amazing Think of what a feat that is for an author To open that dialogue and have a non addict call a recovering addict and askIs this how it is Is this what it s likeThink of what that kind of acknowledgment means to those people who are often invisible or openly ignored by the general public How much can that affect them and their recovery There are NO drawbacks to understanding another person s struggles, only positives for all parties So the author s understanding, honesty and delivery is something to be commended LOUDLY Obviously every addict is different for example I ve NEVER known one that mentions their recovery every time they open their mouth, like Nadia does, hell it s present in damn near every thought she has but there are people in recovery like that So while at times that is incredibly annoying, it s still an accurate representation of someone in the program There s a colossal difference between characters that frustrate you because they re unrealistic and those that are frustrating because they are SO realistic Nadia is the latter. The story is sincere and relatable probably amongst the top ten I ve ever read I did have a few issues with it though The character Audie was a big one Her issues obviously add drama and authenticity to the story without spoilers all I can say is that she s a risk to her friends sobriety and quite honestly is a pretty shitty friend Secondly and again, I understand that this is a REAL thing for addicts I was annoyed with how Nadia confused being in love with being addicted Or rather, she seemed to ignore the possibility of her ever being in love there were only two things she could be in regards to Kaname detached or addicted Nothing in between, no gray area But again, this is a legitimate fear recovering addicts have, so you have to appreciate that kind of honesty. There were a few predictable events in the story but they were done really well, and executed in a way that didn t make you hate the fact that you saw them coming I CANNOT stress how honest and genuine the storyline is though, as someone who was with an addict once upon a time I can tell you that every reaction Kaname had to her was real from acceptance, to ignorance, to utter confusion it was all there and it is exactly what it is like to be in that place Obviously I personally can t say the same for Nadia but those in recovery that I talked to simply saidYes, yes, a thousand times YES This author knows what it s likeOne of those people was actually really excited to read this book now Whether her knowledge is first hand or not is neither here nor there she got it right The story on it s own easily warrants 4 stars, but all the social issues it hits on and hits on fantastically make this a 5 star read, and one everyone should pick up Bravo Seressia Glass, I can t wait for the rest of the series

There s something distinctly cozy about this book despite its occasionally serious subject matter and high steam factor maybe because the heroine is a baker Nadia is a recovering addict who co owns a bakery with her best friend, who is also in recovery Kane an Asian male lead is a human sexuality professor and frequent customer of Nadia s shop Their relationship is on the angsty side it s feelings turned up to 11, all the time but Nadia s friends feature prominently and help balance out th There s something distinctly cozy about this book despite its occasionally serious subject matter and high steam factor maybe because the heroine is a baker Nadia is a recovering addict who co owns a bakery with her best friend, who is also in recovery Kane an Asian male lead is a human sexuality professor and frequent customer of Nadia s shop Their relationship is on the angsty side it s feelings turned up to 11, all the time but Nadia s friends feature prominently and help balance out that claustrophobic, you are my world dynamic There s a follow up book featuring Nadia s business partner Siobhan, who moonlights as a burlesque dancer color me intrigued

Kaname Kane Sullivan, aka Professor Sex, was an absolutely fascinating character half Asian, all smarts and confidence It is rare to find an Asian American romance hero much less one whose ethnicity isn t a convenient plot point.
