I took far, far too long to read this book It was one of the first things I was approved for on Netgalley, and I downloaded it back in September along with four other books, excited to finally have my hands on these fabulous e galleys Unfortunately, I overestimated my ability to read for long stretches on the tiny screen of my iPod, and so while I d gotten over halfway through this book when it expired, that wasn t enough The end result was that yesterday, when I decided I felt like finishing I took far, far too long to read this book It was one of the first things I was approved for on Netgalley, and I downloaded it back in September along with four other books, excited to finally have my hands on these fabulous e galleys Unfortunately, I overestimated my ability to read for long stretches on the tiny screen of my iPod, and so while I d gotten over halfway through this book when it expired, that wasn t enough The end result was that yesterday, when I decided I felt like finishing it, I had to go and jump through hoops to re download it and search out my stopping point I also lost all my bookmarks, so this review will be less coherent than I intended it to be Once I d retrieved a copy, I tore through what remained of this book in less than an hour It is without a doubt one of the best YA paranormals I ve read recently, and here is why it avoids almost every single flaw the genre is so plagued with For instance1 The heroine in your conventional Twilight Fallen Halo YAPNR is often an ordinary girl who we are constantly told is not pretty, despite the opinions of all the guys around her She s shy, supposedly book smart though her actions generally bely that, virginal and easily overcome with hormones when her love interest shows up, and really mostly just a stand in marking where the female reader should insert herself, particularly when the book is written in first person. Not Kali D Angelo Oh, she s the furthest thing from it Our first introduction to this badass chica is her beating up on hellhounds with extraordinary martial competence and no regrets She s definitely supernatural, though she doesn t know what kind Shy is not a word that could be applied to her rather, I would say that she is reserved andout of a conscious decision to distance herself than anything else She s intelligent, though it s mostly street smarts and martial know how I m not complaining at least she makes decisions for good reasons Her virginity, hormones, and appearance have nothing to do with the plot Words cannot express how happy I am for this After the whole book, I couldn t describe Kali to you, nor could I tell you how HAWT the guys were, and I cannot overemphasize hwo great this is Because really, if this girl is going out and killing supernatural critters every other day, why would I want to get distracted by her looks or those of her love interest All I need is her personality.Speaking of I love this girl s soul She s genuninely a good person, though she doubts it every now and again She does what she does for others, or at least she needs to believe that she does She is strong makes sacrifices, takes chances, puts the benefit of the general population before her own without judgement or much bitterness If you were frustrated with Scarlet of Sisters Red for the way she dismissed non hunters, Kali will alleviate that The book s first major event is her luring a chupacabra from the body of someone she doesn t like into her own, counting on her unusual nature to save her but not sure that it will She does it because it s right, and that s all it takes.2 The love interest here, if you can even call him that, is distant and has very little effect on the plot I couldn t describe his abs to you if you tortured me, because they re never mentioned He doesn t smolder or have a crooked grin or whatever the fuck other love interests are doing these days Kali doesn t melt around him or become an airhead He s got a hint of overprotectiveness there was one scene when he intervened in a situation that she was handling just fine, and I was worried, but that was the end of it Their relationship had an interesting dynamic and while I wasn t really into it, I think I m happy with how it turned out.3 The supporting cast are teenagers and also actual people Thank goodness I can t possibly tell you how frustrated I ve become with two dimensional teenage characters that exhibit only the worst possible stereotypes of my age group It s insulting, unfair, and immature on the part of the authors The teens here are simply fabulous Skylar is my favorite, of course, because she s spunky and funny and nothing keeps her down, but I was happiest to read about Bethany the gorgeous, wealthy, blonde cheerleader who is for once in a hundred novels not a bitchy fashion obsessed bimbo She actually comes close to Skylar in my mental ranking of characters she s smart, dry witted, loyal, kind beneath her facade, and the kind of person I d want to be friends with There s also Skylar s broad array of brothers, who added a nice dimension to the cast and also made for a good, light running gag.4 Supernatural creatures Sparklepires Fursploding werewolves Fey Angels Nope Try chupacabras, dragons, basilisks, kelpies, manticores, hellhounds, zombies, hydra, andI don t want to say too much because this is one aspect you ll probably enjoyif you let it unfold naturally, but the supernatural creatures are wonderfully varied and the explanation for their existence is extremely interesting The way they ve been integrated into society is cool as well, and felt very believable to me.5 The finale is unusual There were a couple of big surprises and Kali had to make some hard choices, but I felt like they all came from a good place and they were the right choices for her There s also no cliffhanger to this, but instead a tidy denouement which actually made me sniffle a little and then a last chapter that feels like the lead in to a truly badass series one which I will definitely read.6 Love triangle Nope I realized when I was reading this that I ve started playing spot the love interests with YA books, because there are almost always two and they re usually very identifiable I was completely, utterly wrong here The guy I thought would be a love interest wasn t thank goodness and the one I figured for a mentor figure was not so thrilled about this, but it ll work in the end, I m sure It was so refreshing And you know, in a book this light on romance even the one fellow didn t actually matter that much Lovely.7 The relationship between parent and child is something that many YA authors have trouble with they resort to Disappearing Parent Syndrome in order to explain things away or let their characters do things they otherwise wouldn t have managed Kali s dad, while not the most present of parents, is a really great guy Explaining why would be spoilers, but let s just say that their eventual heart to heart made me want to give my parents big hugs Like every parent, he s doing the best with what he has, and he s made mistakes, but his heart is really in the right place and he tries. There will be aspects of the ending that not everyone will take as easily as I did One of the major revelations really changes the background of the book and the potential nature of the sequels I think it opens up new territory, but that s an individual judgement call that each reader will need to make for themselves. The reason this is a four star book and not a five at times the narrative was repetitive redundant, often in a way which made Kali seem momentarily frustrating Mostly I liked her, but she sometimes assumes that everything has to do with her even when it s completely illogical. Also, I should mention onething being dropped in here courtesy of my lost bookmarks from the beginning, or else I would have mentioned it earlier Kali s emotions about the transition between her human and non human times are intense and well crafted Understandably, she feels like she s losing part of herself when she makes the change, and that made her really sympathetic to me.I m not sure this is one I d advocate that you buy, but it does come out right around Christmas and there are worse books to get as gifts, so at the very least it deserves a place on your wishlist Full disclosure I recieved a galley copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley No external considerations went into this review.

If you are looking for a book with a kickass heroine and fabulous plot then Every Other Day is for you.I was completely blown away by the superb writing, wonderful characters and a plot that would mess you up for good in a good way.It was totally out of this world fantastic.Ms Jennifer Lynn Barnes, this book is astounding This book is definitely worth rereading twice, trice or even a hundred times. It may sound exaggerated but hey I really liked it so sue me DKali seemed normal at first sight If you are looking for a book with a kickass heroine and fabulous plot then Every Other Day is for you.I was completely blown away by the superb writing, wonderful characters and a plot that would mess you up for good in a good way.It was totally out of this world fantastic.Ms Jennifer Lynn Barnes, this book is astounding This book is definitely worth rereading twice, trice or even a hundred times. It may sound exaggerated but hey I really liked it so sue me DKali seemed normal at first sight but she was not One day she was as normal as you and me and the next day she was fearless hunter who kills hellhounds, zombies and all kinds of monsters that we thought only exist in our imagination. The problem started when she saw one of the cheerleaders at school, Bethany had an ouroboro on her lower back which meant that she was infected by a deadly parasite that would eventually kill her Despite being in human form Kali felt it was her responsibility to save this girl. Now it was up to Kail, Bethany and Skylar the school slut who was also Kali s only friend, sort of to discover the conspiracy behind what was happening.Seriously, this book was like a drug It was addicting and intoxicating It was super fast paced which in my opinion suited the story. There was action, action, action There wasn t only action but also some romance in it.Yep, you got it It has a bit of romance too which added a bit of flavor to the already good mixture of the book.Ms Barnes you are a genius.I loved Kali Well, a girl who kicks hellhound s butt is definitely worthy of my adoration Seriously, she rocks Of course there were times that she had the I am alone drama but still I loved her She was one character I would definitely not be forgetting anytime soon It wasn t only Kali I liked though Skylar and Bethany were great secondary characters Skylar would have to be one of my favorites She was a little weird but that s what I loved about her She was outspoken and carefree Bethany on the other hand was your typical b tch cheerleader but made a 180 degrees as the story progresses You ll learn to love her too. Then there was Zev Sigh Yeah he was a little creepy but it worked with all the craziness of this book CRAP Now I have to be unfaithful to my other book boyfriends I would have to say that this is also one of my almost five stars books for the year Still haven t given a five for any book yet I give this book a 4.75 Why Because I had a little problem with the pace of the book it was a little too fast paced for me I usually prefer slower paced books and it s a surprised I liked this book given it s very very fast pace I don t think this book would have a sequel but I really hope it does I wouldn t mind readingabout Kali, Zev and the whole bunch My almost 5 4.74

all in attempt to read ALL THE BOOKS before 2011 closes so that I can come up with the most fair and informed Best of 2011 list as possible Unlike Thea though, I have ZERO discipline and instead of catching up with the books that have come out early in the year and have been languishing in my TBR pile, I am reading books that are not going to be out till the end of the year Every Other Day is one of them and I read it because the premise sounded so good and sometimes you must really follow your instincts, TBR pile be damned sorry, TBR pile I do love you.Every Other Day is set in a world where Charles Darwin s famous voyage to the Galapagos spawned not only the beginning of the theory of Evolution but also revealed to the world the existence of creatures hitherto thought to be merely mythical like Dragons, Chupacabras and Hellhounds, amongst others These days, most of them have been catalogued, studied and some are even protected species despite their obvious threat to humankind.Kali D Angelo is your regular 17 year old human girl Or, mostly Because every other day she is something else something else that as far as she is aware, hasn t been catalogued or studied Something else that is powerful, super strong, nearly indestructible and moved by the need to hunt and slay other preternatural creatures She s been keeping this a secret since she was 12 and without knowing WHAT she is, she has felt apart and lonely for ages She has no friends, barely communicates with her father and mostly goes through the motions. On one of the days she is human, Kali notices that Bethany, a girl from her school, has been contaminated by a Chupacabra, a powerful parasite whose mark means death to any human Moved by instinct and her knowledge that at dawn she will bethan human and will be able to kill the creature, Kali manages to transfer the mark to herself, opening up a can of worms by doing so First of all, when dawn comes and she is not human any, not only the creature seems to be a perfect fit, heightening her powers but through the Chupacabra she is also able to psychically connect to another person who seems to know what she is, a guy named Zev Unfortunately for her, the presence of the Chupacabra at their school was not a random accident and soon Kali and her new found friends Bethany and Skyler who is a bit psychic find themselves at the centre of a scientific conspiracy.Every Other Day is a cool mixture of Urban Fantasy and Science Fiction and it has a lot going for it The pacing is incredible with non stop action the whole story takes place over the course of merely two days The twists keep coming and the sense of danger is present throughout The author does not shy away from it, there are never cop outs and the story is much darker and muchviolent than I anticipated it would be A lot of Paranormal Fantasy YA these days deals with supernatural creatures but they are usually de fanged beyond recognition Not here, what who Kali is on her non human days is a wondrous, powerful, truly scary thing. The premise itself is an interesting one because it adds not only tension with Kali usually waiting for her non human days to be able to use her powers but also gravitas to her arc every day she literally dies She is never fully human nor is she that other thing She is not only different but she feels differently every other day This dichotomy, the moral conundrums about her humanity or lack of, she finds herself grappling with, are fascinating and mostly well explored by the story. What I loved the most about the book though were the three female characters and their relationship with each other They are three fantastic girls, with different personalities and motivations They exist on their own grounds and I loved how they are not framed by their relationships with boys I am sure that Skyler, with her psychic powers is supposed to be darling of the story, but Bethany, the popular cheerleader was awesome She is not exactly the nicest person around and I loved her to bits because she had many other facets that were slowly revealed without making her any less popular, or demoting her from her top place at school A lot of times I feel that the Popular Cheerleader has to be brought down in order to grow as a character and I really appreciated that Bethany went through stuff without having to lose part of who she is.On the down side, there are three things that kept Every Other Day from being the excellent read it could have been 1 The inordinate amount of repetitious inner monologue Kali constantly repeats how people like me are followed by a breakdown of her abilities over and over again I get it I understand that this works as a means to create an identity for herself but it is really, really tiresome 2 The romance Calling the relationship between Kali and Zev a romance is almost a misnomer because it is so secondary to the plot as to make it almost an after thought but there were things about it that gave me pause When Kali finds out what she is, she also finds out that her species comes in pairs and this brings an almost immediate connection with Zev who is supposedly her other half I felt uncomfortable about what seemed a glaring absence of any questioning whatsoever about this obvious lack of choice Having said that, I though the resolution for their connection to be excellent and I believe there is scope for growth and discussion in future books.3 The ending and how it connects with the overall world building Without spoiling, the ending brought forth revelations about certain things and about the nature of certain people that it was unnecessarily convoluted This is very unfortunate as up to that point, I was actually digging the worldbuilding.Despite these criticisms, I actually quite enjoyed reading Every Other Day and thought it was a solid albeit flawed debut to a series that has a lot of potential for growth Here is hoping

Four Stars This book features a unique kick butt heroine Lots of fun Tick Tick the seconds drag, only twenty two hours and thirty six secondstick tick tick For Kali her wrist watch is a perpetual drag, only twenty two hours and thirty six secondstick tick tick For Kali her wrist watch is a perpetual enemy, since it constantly counts down the hours to the next day Another day where she will either be a plain, boring human, who lacks any special abilities or a day when she is a seemingly impervious, kick butt, non human, who spends her time battling the zombies, hell hounds and other preternatural creatures that roam the world Seventeen year old Kali has no understanding behind her inexplicable metamorphosis every other day She only knows that on the days when she is something else she possesses an insatiable lust to hunt and destroy the creatures of the night The hands drag across her watch at a crawling pace as Kali suffers through an unbearably, long school day Slouched down in the bleachers trying to blend into the background she bides her time, then a friendly voice and an offer of an orange tic tac and a stick of gum change everything Soon Kali finds this school day is anything but ordinary Bethany, the head cheerleader and popularity queen, bears the mark of a fatal, parasitic chupacabra bite An incontrovertible death sentence Kali makes a rash decision and lures the lethal chupacabra into her ill prepared human body The parasite infesting her body soon proves to be just the beginning of her worries The steps of treachery stalk down the hall the sharp, snapping, strike of a set of smart heels slap toward her signaling that her troubles have only just begun Will Kali survive until tomorrow What I Liked The characters in this book are so much fun and decidedly unexpected Beginning with Kali, our heroine, with her unique ability to morph every other day into an unstoppable force bent on destruction She is smart, sassy and full of snark When Bethany popped onto the scene I groaned inwardly and resigned myself to suffering through the taunting of a mean girl prima donna but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there wasto her character I actually enjoyed Bethany and I was so relieved that she eclipsed beyond the typical beautiful, teenage girl, who thrusts her nose in the air She does retain a few of those qualities but not enough to make me dislike her Skylar, what a blast of fresh air, she is quirky, endearing and doggedly determined to prove that she is indeed psychic despite the constant nay saying she receives, especially from her brothers Her optimistic attitude remains undeterred in spite of the continual antagonization dished out by the cheerleaders and her five brothers Her good nature takes it all in stride and she introduces herself to Kali as the school slut and then laughs it off and says it says so right on my locker She also has a penchant for collecting the cast offs of the school population Her ebullient personality is irresistible The plot is engaging, full of action and it has mystery too I enjoyed trying to uncover the truth behind Kali s eccentric condition As you get further in you find that there are several other secrets to unravel, such as who are the villains Who tried to infect the cheerleaders with the chupacabra Who is Zev This book has its share of surprises I enjoyed the personification of the villianess The way she strides on scene with her swift, clipping stacatto steps I could almost hear the sound pounding out of the pages It was like the bad guy music in a movie except in words I appreciated the setting of this book Ms Barnes creates an alternate universe that mirrors our own with a few, slight aberrations The illustrious Darwin writes his famous volume not on the evolution of the species, instead he uncovers the presence of the preternaturals A revolutionary minute in time that changes their world Humans two hundred years later, now live side by side with zombies, hellhounds, dragons and all the other paranormals that populate our imagination Most of these creatures are under governmental protection There is plenty of creative science woven throughout as well as scientific classifications and genetic makeup of the preternaturals to add authenticity. And The Not So Much I was intrigued by the symbiotic relationship that Kali forms with the chupacabra but I was confused and I thought that the parasitic bond neededclarification How exactly does it work How big are they How do they facilitate the psychic connection Is the infection permanent The little bit of information that was put forth was a bit muddled There were many confusing questions that were left unanswered What was the deal with Bethany s mother Was she crazy or drugged At the first encounter she comes across as a little unhinged, and in a cloud of confusion Later, she meets Kali and she is intelligent and normal What role does Bethany s father ultimately play Zev, I am uncertain of my final feelings on this character, I thought at first he is introduced as a possible love interest but now I don t know what or who he is I definitely needinformation on this character I never received a full explanation to Kali s rare traits There are some suggestions but nothing that states definitively what she is I enjoyed the introduction of Skylar s five teasing brothers but I wish they were better developed, especially Elliot He is prevalent through a good portion of the story but he lacks depth It seems his main role in the book is to deter Skylar from her beliefs in her psychic ablity I hope that we can get to know the brothers better in the next installment The conclusion, the book moves to a speedy end and I was expecting an explosive finish, it wasof a fizzle The finale was a big convoluted mass of unresolved issues I was not aware going in that this was the first book in a series but it was obvious that there needs to be another book to tie off the loose ends The tragic loss was horrendous Every Other Day is the first work I have read by the talented Jennifer Lynn Barnes This was a lively, exciting book with many novel concepts that will capture your attention Her characters are like able and engaging Snap this book up and prepare for an interesting little adventure I plan on adding some of Ms Barnes other books to my reading shelf A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by EgmontUSA via Netgalley.Favorite Quotations Even without my powers, I would gladly have faced down hellspawn over high school mean girls any day Some
