Enjoyed these travel tales, especially those about places I have been to, or want to visit someday.Martha Gellborn s essay on Belize reminded me of my visit there in early 2010, as she described her attempts at seeing the great reef there I had my first and only scuba diving experience there, as well as touring Belize City on foot. Also enjoyed descriptions of the Florida Keys, India, Israel, and Uganda Robert Hughes, Calvin Trillin, and E.L Doctorow are some of thenotable writers displ Enjoyed these travel tales, especially those about places I have been to, or want to visit someday.Martha Gellborn s essay on Belize reminded me of my visit there in early 2010, as she described her attempts at seeing the great reef there I had my first and only scuba diving experience there, as well as touring Belize City on foot. Also enjoyed descriptions of the Florida Keys, India, Israel, and Uganda Robert Hughes, Calvin Trillin, and E.L Doctorow are some of thenotable writers displaying their talents in this book

I like travel essays that both capture specific moments in time and place, and touch on somethinglasting, even eternal I like reading anthologies that introduce me to new writers, and old I got a thrill here with essays by Martha Gellhorn Belize and E L Doctorow India I also enjoyed reading about a rugged part of Spain by someone i d never read before Some places didn t appeal Berlin while Senegal sounded intriguing All were good to visit for awhile A nice collection.

Nice travel essays about places you will never probably go but if you like anecdotal insights into the slightlythan oridnary out of the way places seen through the first person travelers eyes, this should be entertaining.

Conde Nast has a reputation, and the quality of the writing is certainly up to that standard as far as form and vocabulary is concerned The pieces though all have a very dated feeling to them, as opposed to timeless, which makes them a bit less appealing to me.

  6. Donna Luu says:

As with anthologies, there was good and not so much Good Sydney, Belize, Emilia Romagna The essay on St Petersburg actually deterred me from going The essay on Pakistan seems like It must be out of date.
