Stacia Kane s Sacrificial Magic, book 4 in her Downside Ghosts series is her best book to date If you re not reading this series about a drug addicted ghost busting witch investigator, you need to If you re not reading this series about a drug addicted ghost busting witch investigator, you need to start reading ASAP This series of books shouldn t work for me since I m not a big fan of ghosts, or the plight of a drug addicted protagonist, who not only has major self esteems issues, but her destructive lifestyle is hard to swallow But the way Stacia has written Chess Putnam, she allows the reader to walk in Chess s shoes where we see what tough situations Chess must go through to make it through the day You can t help but sympathize with such a character who s close to pitiful as you can get But through it all, Chess remains strong and is the ultimate survivor She may be downtrodden and lives in despair, including losing herself to hers pills, poppers, dust and other mind destroying drugs, but there s something about her we can all understand. There s a little of Chess inside all of us and the greatest thing with this series is watching Chess win in the end And now that she s found love in its purest and most tender of forms, you d think Chess would get a break, but in Sacrificial Magic that s not the case You will experience a roller coaster of emotions while reading this one I was actually sweating at one point because I thought Chess would lose everything dear to her Stacia gives the reader a ride they won t forget. When we left Chess, she seemed to be in a good place The reason for this is because of her new relationship with her drug pusher s henchman and hitman, Terrible Chess has fallen deeply in love with Terrible who returns her feelings also These two have been through the wringer together There was a lot of mistrust between them in the beginning, mainly because Chess would keep Terrible in the dark about things, and she was involved in a sexual relationship with her drug dealer mob boss s enemy s son, Lex Chess lost herself in Lex s body and the great sex he could give her without being emotionally involved Chess enjoyed Lex s company and he treated her with respect and gave her free drugs Since Chess thought she didn t stand a chance with Terrible, she kept turning to Lex But ten Terrible s jealousy exploded Now Chess and Terrible are together and it s quite the thing of beauty to watch.Terrible is terribly ugly to the entire world, but not to Chess Terrible is this hulking, muscular, street enforcer who has bad hair and a face not even a mother could love He scares the living daylights out of everyone, and his street dialogue is hard to understand To most he comes across as uneducated and intelligent But underneath this rouch and tumble package is a very smart and intelligent man who is very handsome to Chess. This excerpt explains perfectly how important Terrible is to Chess, where without him she would shrivel up and die Seeing him was like being hit in the chest Like something exploding inside her, a quick ravenous fire that made her shiver So bright and so hot it still amazed her that no one else seemed to notice it, that every eye in the place didn t turn to her while she went incandescent Chess is very careful around Terrible and puts on kid gloves with him She s afraid to lose him, and because of this, she constantly second guesses herself If only she could be honest with Terrible and tell him how she really feels, than everything would be okay But Chess is not big on communication and a man like Terrible can t always read between the lines Their relationship is very fragile and it starts to unwind because Chess is so afraid of messing it up She also thinks she isn t worthy of Terrible It s really heartbreaking to be privy to Chess thoughts and feelings because you want to shake the woman because you know she ll ruin everything.Chess is very self assured when it comes to her job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth Her latest investigation leads her to a school that may or may not be haunted There Chess meets Lex s sister Beaulah who rubs her the wrong way Chess isn t too happy about taking on this case because it brings Lex into close proximity to her, which would make Terrible very unhappy But Lex, along with Beaulah, wants to help her solve the case, and from that Chess finds out some disturbing things at the school. While this is going on, Terrible is there to lend a hand, but then Chess starts a downward spiral that ends up with destroying all her progress with Terrible Once her drugs she relied on kept her going, now that she has Terrible she doesn t need them as much, but they re still her crutch Also, The person using dark magic for revenge, which takes place at the school, is still on the loose and won t stop until they succeed in their ultimate plan that could make Chess turn her back on everything and those she loves the most.I love the type of partnership and relationship Chess and Terrible have These two must be the most unconventional couple I ve ever read It s all about reading in between the lines with these two Both are in unfamiliar territory when it comes to their love, although Terrible fairs better than Chess.Stacia does something very dangerous at one point There s a scene where Chess is so doped up and paranoid, which leads to a violent altercation with Terrible She tells Terrible everything that has been eating away at her, even going as far to insult him cruelly and says some debasing things in order to hurt him Terrible s normal restraint is put to the test here and it s the turning point for both of them in so many ways This is a gut wrenching scene because it s equally disturbing and powerful but works. Many of the scenes and actions here have layers that must be unraveled The scene toward the end where Chess must make a life changing decision will make your heart jump into your throat The aftermath may have you in tears. One of the best loves scenes I ve read so far this year is in this book If the car is a rockin , don t come a knockin comes to mind.Sacrificial Magic is one of my most anticipated reads of 2012 and it doesn t disappoint It s explosive, full of nail biting tension and has incredibly written passages I kept re reading certain paragraphs because the words sound like poetry to me Stacia has blown my mind away with Sacrificial Magic She continues to improves with every book This is a must read and will most likely be in my top 5 favorite books for this year Chess and Terrible have become my latest addiction where I wait with bated breath for their next adventure

I spent the first three quarters of the book feeling almost traumatized by how closely some of those passages resembled my own inner monologues But then, and I promise promise not to give anything away there s a part at the end that made me soar It made me remember that even as trauma and damage are hollowing you out, they re making you deeper They re making you capable of feelingThey re turning you into yourself The main reason that I am not giving this five stars is that I feel ready forAs a reader, I am ready to knowabout this world I think that it s completely believable and interesting as hell that Chess would work for The Church without really questioning the facts of their history or their underlying motivations And I think it s believable that she d work for Bump under duress and not demand better for herself But, I am ready to knowabout the Church and its motivations I am ready to see the bigger picture here and focus less on the smaller hauntings summonings mysteries And although I don t think it would be realistic for her to become fully healed, I am ready for her to start at least wantingfor herself If you are a fan of this series, this one is not to be missed It s the best yet, in my opinion If you haven t read these and you love urban fantasy, I suggest that you get the first one right away And if you haven t gotten into urban fantasy, but love complex, interesting characters and gritty stories, then I d definitely give these a try.Perfect Musical PairingsThat s right, I said Pairings I inhaled the first three in this series back in 2010 and I never reviewed them Now s my chance to make up for that SOME MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW For Terrible Modest Mouse Spitting VenomOf course only an eight and a half minute long, weirdly addictive song will do for my Terrible This song is about two people who argue and spit venom at each other, so much so that it seems that the best thing to do would be to just end it But then, repeating through the final minutes is Cheer up baby, it wasn t quite so bad, for every bit of venom put out the antidote was had, which makes me a little emotional when I think about Terrible and Chess And now, for your amusement, I will describe my feelings about this song using quotes about Terrible Press play and come along with me.00 00 You look Elvis vomited you up 00 55 She hadn t known he had feelings.1 27 I don t think you could be invisible anywhere 3 27 Still the same features, the lumpy nose and the jutting brow and the hard, dark eyes, but not ugly any Full of character.4 15 I sink you, that I will not be sunk by you sob 5 22 I knew you d find me 8 29 Yeah Yeah, I do, shit Terrible I really love you hits replay for the twelfth time For Chess Modest Mouse Little MotelAnd of course these two would have similar songs There are so many parallels between them This song is about that gut twisting feeling of the clock running down on a relationship It s that feeling of doom, of knowing that you re going to be by yourself again soon, of worrying that the other person won t even miss you. Also seen on The Readventurer

The Church of Truth has also assigned Chess Putnam the task of investigating grissly ritual murders, and of course Chess gets assigned after a fellow Church Debunker goes missing while conducting the investigating She must now begin her investigation in Slobag s territory a rival drug lord to Bump, so understandably Terrible is not permitted Unfortunately this forces her to work muchclosely with Lex much to Terible s disdain This aides and abets Chess irrational paranoia and self abhorrent inner turmoil get annoyed, and she d look clingy and pitiful It would be like admitting she needed no, not admitting, there was nothing to admit It would be like saying that she needed to have him around, and if she did that he d be turned off. She s unsure how to behave since this will be the first time she has been in such close proximity with Lex her Ex Lover Ex boyfriend Friend with Benefits Casual Hookup Well you get the picture Prior to Terrible with Chess all these categories collided together into a tiny package of dispair as this is her first genuine, selfless, loving relationship with her fully committed boyfriend Terrible She s uneasy about fully accepting his no strings attached love WhatHe looked so angry for a second she thought he was going to slam on the brakes, and braced herself Well, braced herself as best she could she didn t think she could have picked up anything heavier than a cigarette at that particular moment. They made you Fuck Shoulda fuckin known No it wasn t that bad I had my gloves He shook his head, his anger still filling the car Sure it weren t Swhy you tanked up soon s you left, aye She blinked That stung A lot And what was she supposed to say in reply Especially when it was true Are..are you mad at me What Why Naw, baby Just ain t can believe they made you do that, is all His being mad made her feel like Terrible cared about her. Thoughts like that from Chess just remind me how truly damaged Poor Pitiful Chess truly is I make no secret of the fact that although I cannot possibly begin to relate to Chess as a drug addict, I m instantly drawn to her character and wish I could shake her and tell her, Terrible loves her unconditionallyBut.no, you didn t want, um, you didn t want me anyMy heart goes out to Chess in Sacrificial Magic It s seems her self loathing and paranoia are at an all time high I m still unsure whether her anxiety was drug related or if it s due to her new budding serious relationship with Terrible Most likely it s a combination of them both Her anxiety takes root and develops into a dark and ugly cloud, I just can t help but feel her pain right along with her, unfounded or not She constantly worries if Terrible trusts her working so closely with Lex, she fears he may believe she s The Church Witch involved with helping Slobag work against Terrible Any rational person could see that Terrible would never believe she would be working with Slobag against Bump and Terrible, but Chess isn t always a rational thinker For fuck s sake She didn t spend most of her income on drugs so she could have clean fucking blood And that green tea tasted like swamp water and death. While Chess is investigating these murders and their involvement with a ChurchWitch and Bump and Slobag s men she acquires a new feminine friendship in Beulah and I hope to see their friendship build It s almost like a friendship version of West Side Story Regardless of how inconspicuous these forbidden lines are, they re still there and everyone in Downside is aware of them I m hoping that even thought they re from two different sides of the drug territories of Downside, Chess and Beulah are able to maintain a healthy friendship and perhaps balance out Chess anxiety and self unsavory thoughts of herself This friendship makes me smile, because Chess could really benefit from her first female friendship and everybody needs a friend to lean on This friendship has the opportunity to give Chess the self worth she s lacking His door slammed shut behind her She ran down the hall on unsteady feet, almost fell on the stairs Wished she had fallen, and broken her stupid fucking neck on the wayMy emotions were in a blender one moment I was laughing, giddy happy, then within a page turn I was crying, my chest felt heavy, and I felt the need to put the book down and walk away for a breather, yet I couldn t bring myself to walk away from this hot mess For some unknown reason I m drawn to dysfunctional characters like buttermilk batter on fried chicken I devour every bit of this Just when I think all hearts are safe in Downside, Stacia Kane scares me to death And Terrible.he was just a thug A violent thug at that And he had something to do with drugs too, and prostitution and all manner of other things He was not a good person What redeeming qualities could a person like that haveChess What s troubling He loved her In one scene I wanted to step in and mediate and calm the fire down because my heart was breaking into tiny pieces while Chess Psychopomp was sucking it dry Luckily for me, my most cherished books are those that, stir up emotions I had yet to realize I had available for a fictional relationship As scared as these ghosts make me feel, I m always left with the desire to live in this Magical Downside not so holy series of Downside Ghosts and pal around with Chess and flirt with her boyfriend Terrible Stayed a while, though, aye I just I almost died on that fucking catwalk I was on a catwalk and it fell, that s how I hurt my cheek and I didn t feel like being alone and I knew you were busy, and he was there Oh, I dig Hey, maybe you give me the number that dame Cassie, the one wore your face Next time aught happens to me, I give her a ring up for company No worries, aye This book was truly a gem to read, and I recommend this to any Urban Fantasy lover that prefers their read to be dark, gritty, sexy and fantastic Downside fans will not be disappointed with this latest installment The only unfavorable part of this book is that it endedhowever, Stacia Kane is spoiling us Downside fans because we only have to wait a few short months for the next book Chasing Magic to be released I LOVED Sacrificial Magic Love you, too, Chess You got that, aye Ain t you know it Love you right, till it hurts Ain t goin nowhere, don t need to cry, sall right up ARC provided by Netgalley

is like coming home minus the slums and drugs and whatnot Stacia Kane is a masterful writer and proves it once again in Sacrificial Magic Sacrificial Magic takes place a month or two after the events of City of Ghosts Chess and Terrible are trying out a real relationship, which for Chess, is like walking on a circus wire One wrong move and she believes her relationship with Terrible will disintegrate She is still working for the Church and maintaining an excellent track record Bump and Slobag are still fighting for territory and shady business in Downside And, as always, ghosts are out and about.Chess is assigned to investigate a school on Slobag s side of town A ghost of an ex student has been spotted, and this ghost sighting is seemingly connected to sacrificial magic and fires that are occurring in Bump s territory Chess is once again caught in the middle between the Church and Bump While investigating the school haunting, she must also investigate the murders and fires in Bump s buildings. This book takes us very deeply into Chess psyche From previous books, we all know that Chess has a tragic and tortured past We already know that she has next to no self esteem In Sacrificial Magic, we learndetails about Chess past abuse and we see that her self worth is evendamaged than previously thought Chess is one of the most dysfunctional characters I have ever come across She sees herself in such a warped way that it causes a lot of friction between her and Terrible, and it brought me to tears It s amazing that Chess is still alive, considering what she has suffered through and how she hates herself I was awash in her misery and pained at her dysfunctional interactions with Terrible This is a major theme throughout this book.Security Chess hoped and hoped would last, despite the nagging voice in the back of her mind that insisted it couldn t, it wouldn t, she didn t deserve it, and she should just give up the idea.Terrible is so very vulnerable in his own right Chess thinks throughout this book that Terrible doesn t trust her, when all along, it was the other way around, and it took Chess a lot of heartache to come to this realization But Terrible has enough self esteem to be Chess rock There s a heartbreaking scene where Terrible and Chess say some truly horrid things to one another Things that are fueled by an exceedingly high Chess But Terrible never pushes Chess away, and he never judges her.And there was that damned grin again That was so dangerous So fucking dangerous And every day that went by only made it worse, only made it harder to face the inevitable moment when he d decide he d had enough of her, when he d get tired of her body and realize who she really was That he didn t trust her and never could Every day that went by was another day gone Another day closer to the end At some point during this book, Chess begins to turn the corner on her perception of her drug addiction Chess contemplates her past emotional scars, and her previous suicidal thoughts We even see the genesis of her drug issues While working this case, she finds a dead body of a man that has died due to a drug overdose This slowly plays on Chess mind through the remainder of this book.Dead and alone in a room full of drugs, rotting and alone with pills crushed into the carpet Dead while nobody gave a fuck, a lonely addict s death in silence with no one to even notice Tears poured down her cheeks and she couldn t stop them her breath whistled in her chest Without Terrible that s what she d be, no one cared, no one really gave Chess also has to work with ex lover Lex She was in a very precarious position throughout this book As much as Chess loves Terrible, and she really, truly does, she likes Lex and want to be friends with him He puts her in a difficult position with Terrible a couple of times I ve said this before about Lex, but Stacia Kane does not give us the easy out on this one Lex has never done anything wrong to Chess He has helped her out of some very bad situations, and it is clear in this book that he still has feelings for Chess There is a big confrontation at the end of this book, with some surprises Chess is given a choice and a temptation that was nerve wracking for me to read There are guns and knives, magic and fighting, ghosts and fire It is a huge ending that will reverberate throughout the next book I chose you, she managed, choking out the words in a strangled, warbly sounding whisper I chose you, I chose you all but I chose you, I love you you much and I chose you There is a very touching scene between Chess and Terrible at the end of this book that had my Terrible loving heart racing with happiness Chess battles her inner demons and truthfully tells Terrible what he means to her, and it was a beautiful scene Chess is so very damaged, yet she grows so much in this book She comes to terms with her feelings for Terrible, she begins to realize that she is worth something as a person, and she is in the very beginning of viewing her drug addiction as a real problem I m so proud of how far Chess has come in this series Throughout it all, Terrible is Chess rock He accepts every damaged bit of her, and this is what is giving her the strength to become the person she wants to be.Now she did see the change in him, saw the slow smile start, the one that always made her feel so good because she could make it appear Always want you, Chessiebomb Always There are still a lot of outstanding questions left at the end of this book, which I am guessing will be dealt within depth in Chasing Magic We saw the effect the sigil has on Terrible in this book, but how will this hurt Terrible in future books Can Chess remove it Will Chess continue on this path of self worth, or will she have set backs How will Lex and his new position affect Chess and Terrible in the future How will Chess relationship with Terrible affect her drug addiction Will she truly learn to trust another person June and the release of Chasing Magic cannot get here quick enough He smelled like home

Is it ok to love a series mainly for the relationship drama Because that s, frankly, why I enjoyed this particular installment Even though City of Ghosts ended on a high note, love wise, and the following short story Home was all lovey sweetness, Sacrificial Magic is full of delicious drama Saying I love you doesn t really solve Chess emotional and commitment problems She is such a hot mess Is it ok to love a series mainly for the relationship drama Because that s, frankly, why I enjoyed this particular installment Even though City of Ghosts ended on a high note, love wise, and the following short story Home was all lovey sweetness, Sacrificial Magic is full of delicious drama Saying I love you doesn t really solve Chess emotional and commitment problems She is such a hot mess
